Ruby on Rails Tutorial: first_app deployment

Man took to 3 days to setup RoR and get the first_app successfully deployed.

Advice if you’re using windows, use some virtualization and use Linux.  Actually follow the Gemfile instructions as is. Even better would be to use the Gemfile from the book’s github page. Or my github.

Notes:

If you use the book’s github. The gem pg is for postgres. To get around installing postgres you can do: ‘bundle install –without production’.  An example is showed in Chapter 2.

On the Linux system: apt-get install libpq-dev

Then the gem command will be happy.

To save one line of commands for git checkin

Instead of

git add .
git commit -m "message"

do

git commit -a -m "message"

The -a flag does the add . (all files)
