BeagleBoard Xm: NFS boot

Here’s how I got the BB Xm to boot the rootfs over NFS. I’m doing this with the Ti Sitara Linux and their SDK installed certain configurations for NFS rootfs boot. Also, this is for booting the uEnv.txt and uImage from the SD card.

On (Linux) Host Machine:

  • /etc/exports

/PATH/TO/ti-sdk-05.05.00.00/targetNFS *(rw,nohide,insecure,no_subtree_check,async,no_root_squash)

On Target’s SD card ‘boot’ dir:

  • uEnv.txt

loadaddr=0x80200000
serverip=192.168.1.77 #<HOST MACHINE IP ADDR>
nfsargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyO2,115200n8 noinitrd ip=dhcp rw root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=${serverip}:/PATH/TO/ti-sdk-05.05.00.00/targetNFS nolock rsize=4096 wrsize=4096
loadkernel=fatload mmc 0 ${loadaddr} uImage
uenvcmd=usb start; run loadkernel;run nfsargs;bootm ${loadaddr}

  • Important Points:
    • /dev/nfs rw nfsroot=<HOST_IP>:<HOST/PATH/TO/TARGETNFS>
    • ip=dhcp
